The Madison Water Utility, located in Wisconsin, US, has commenced a project to upgrade a water main along Droster Road on the City’s east side using Trenchless Technology to avoid digging up the entire street.

The new technique will rehabilitate the existing main, which has been showing signs of deterioration, by inserting a liner through a minor excavation at one end of the main segment. This pilot project will be the first in the state to use the new trenchless method.

Residents will not have their street torn up, and water service will be only minimally interrupted while the work takes place. While the liner is being installed for the entire main between E. Buckeye Road and Starker Avenue, a temporary above-ground water system will supply drinking water.

According to Water Utility Engineer Adam Wiederhoeft, the new water main lining should last at least 50 years, and it is more cost-effective and less intrusive than traditional water main replacement methods. All the liner materials have been certified for use in drinking water systems. The project is expected to be completed in about a month.

Insituform Technologies, Inc. has announced a $US5.8 million contract extension from the City of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. In 2010, the city awarded Insituform the first year of this renewable term contract and will have the option to renew this contract for one more year in 2012.

Insituform Technologies Ltd Canada President Ken Foster said “Insituform has been installing cured-in-place pipe (CIPP) in Calgary since the mid-1980s and we are pleased to continue to provide high quality pipeline rehabilitation solutions. Our crews remain committed to providing this community with renewed pipelines with minimal disruption.”

Over the next 12 months, Insituform expects to complete approximately 90,000 ft of CIPP rehabilitation on wastewater pipelines ranging from 8 inches to 48 inches in diameter. It is expected that Insituform’s proprietary air inversion steam cure installation method will be used throughout the project. This installation method reduces energy and water usage by approximately 95 per cent.

Thames Water is replacing a section of worn-out, century-old water main that has burst three times in three years between Bicester and Amrosden, located in the UK.

More than 2 km of 12 inch cast-iron pipe between Bicester and Ambrosden will be replaced with tough new plastic pipe.

The major project is part of a £1.5m scheme to cut leakage in Oxfordshire and to minimise the risk of interruptions to the water supply.

Thames Water has been granted special permission from English Nature to work near a community of protected a Great Crested Newts.

Thames Water’s Head of Capital Delivery Lawrence Gosden said, “This is a must-do job to improve the water supply network over the long term for our customers in Oxfordshire.

“We’d ask people to bear with us in the knowledge that the purpose of this project is to reduce the number of disruptive burst and leaky pipes in the area by replacing creaky old cast-iron mains with tough, new plastic ones less prone to breaks and leaks.

There will be no road closures in place although there will be some traffic management along the route of the pipe on the A41 from Bicester, along Ploughey Road and into Ambrosden Village.

Work is set to commence 6 October and will be ongoing until February 2012.

Jamko Technical Solutions, Inc. and Dyna Mole have announced the strategic alliance which will merge Jamko’s advance cleaning and inspection pipeline services with Dyna Mole’s trenchless pipe lining and directional drilling services to provide a turnkey non-destructive pipeline solution.

By offering a single service agreement for pipeline maintenance and remediation, the benefits of non-destructive inspection coupled with non-destructive repairs can rehabilitate piping systems without the added costs commonly associated to traditional ‘poke and hope’ methods.

Using advance locating devices to crawl and inspect piping as long as 1,000 ft, damages and blockages can be identified accurately and remedied quickly using line-in-place technology up to 24 inches in diameter. The ease and accuracy of both methods prevent costly project overruns and unneeded roadway disturbances commonly found with traditional remediation projects.

Business Development Manager of Jamko Technical Solutions Karl Schlifke said, “From a new build to regular maintenance to remediation projects, the strategic alliance will deliver experienced field technicians and advanced pipeline technology to customers throughout New York State and the New England region.”

The City of Naperville Department of Public Utilities-Water has commenced work on its water main rehabilitation project, located in Chicago, Illinois, US using innovative trenchless techniques.

This project will take place on Chicago Avenue from Pembroke Road to Charles Street. Traffic patterns will be altered on Chicago Avenue throughout construction, and signs will be in place directing motorists to alternate routes.

This project will utilise an innovative Trenchless Technology consisting of cured-in-place thermosetting resin pipe that is installed inside the existing water main. The process creates a structurally sound and flexible pipe, therefore eliminating corrosion and greatly reducing future water main failures.

The use of Trenchless Technology has many advantages over conventional dig and replace methods. These include a significant reduction in pavement replacement, property restoration and other construction-related issues such as noise and dust.

Additional advantages of this Trenchless Technology include rapid installation and minimal future disruptions caused by water main breaks. In addition, the life of the existing water main is extended by more than 50 years.

Wachs Water Services has been awarded a $US9.4 million contract extension to continue supporting the City of Atlanta, Georgia, US, in their efforts to assess, test and survey thousands of valves and fire hydrants throughout their water network.

One of the largest water infrastructure projects of its kind in the United States, Wachs Water Services is helping to improve and rehabilitate vital water distribution system assets and control points for the City of Atlanta as part of a joint venture with Brindley Pieters and Associates.

The ongoing program has accomplished several water system improvements to date, including achieving a high degree of water main valve operability that has set industry standards for large urban cities.

Wachs Water Services President Cliff Wilson said “Managing an aging water network requires a results-driven approach that achieves both immediate system improvements and long-term sustainability.”

The program in Atlanta is focused on improving water main valve and fire hydrant operability, enabling the utility to better respond to water main breaks, achieve a high-level of operational control of the water network, and pinpoint repair and replacement of water distribution assets more effectively.

Working with the Atlanta Department of Watershed Management, services provided by the joint venture include asset location, operational condition assessment, and GPS location mapping of critical water assets.

Poly Fusion has enjoyed a constructive relationship with Coninstrugas Columbia since Jan. 2011, and expects Coninstrugas to continue to play an important role in the distribution of Fine Poly Fusion’s fusion machine and products in the future. However, the increasingly difficult business environment we are currently operating in dictates that Fine Poly Fusion enhances its ability to directly market its equipment, products and/or services to potential customers through a variety of means. As a result, starting immediately Poly Fusion will be taking a more active role in the promotion of its equipment, products and services, including increased marketing efforts in locations that were once serviced exclusively by Coninstrugas. By doubling efforts we believe that we can better reach and serve more individuals and entities that will benefit from using our equipment, products and/or services.

We expect to maintain a productive relationship with Coninstrugas and yourselves and hope that they and you share this desire. Should you have any questions regarding the foregoing, please contact me.
